What educators are saying

I used this to start our review for the end of the course exam. It was very thorough in covering Protein Synthesis and I will be using it again next year
Thank you for creating this WebQuest! I used it as an extra credit assignment to help those who needed a little practice with the protein synthesis process. Most of my students took advantage of it and said that it really helped them. Thanks!

Description

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ This protein synthesis webquest uses interactives and short engaging videos to teach students about types of RNA, protein synthesis, transcription, translation, how to read a codon chart, and the central dogma of molecular biology. Editable MS Word, PDF, and Google Slides all included!

Students will lead their own learning as they complete this editable, printable, and digital webquest. Students will learn about and simulate how proteins are made from transcription to translation using interactives, and then will learn and practice how to read codons and find amino acids using a codon chart. This resource makes a great introduction, review, absent student work, sub-plan, guided practice, or student-led teaching tool! All non-flash modern resources are used - works beautifully on PC, Mac, iPads, Tablets, and most modern cellular devices.

OBJECTIVES
- Explain the Central Dogma of Molecular Biology
- Differentiate between and describe the structure and functions of the three types of RNA (mRNA, rRNA, and tRNA)
- Describe and Simulate how proteins are made through transcription and translation
- Use a codon chart to identify amino acids based on mRNA codons

⭐ TOPICS

- Central Dogma of Molecular Biology
- Types of RNA (mRNA, rRNA, and tRNA)
- Structure and Function of the 3 Types of RNA
- Protein Synthesis
- Transcription and RNA Polymerase
- Translation
- Amino Acids, Polypeptides, Peptide Bonds
- How to Read a Codon Chart
- Codon Chart Practice

No prior knowledge needed! You can utilize this activity as classwork, a sub-plan, an introduction, a review, or even homework! Student will follow clear directions to answer questions as they move through the virtual activities. Questions are chunked and aligned for Biology standards in a sequence that builds on each concept. Students learn so much and find it easy, informative, and fun all at the same time!

The student handout includes tinyURLs, long URLs, and QR Codes to help students easily reach each virtual activity to immediately begin learning and applying their new knowledge. Your students will have no confusion as they move through the activities and will be on task, having fun, and learning!

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSHS-LS3-1
Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring. Assessment does not include the phases of meiosis or the biochemical mechanism of specific steps in the process.
NGSSMS-LS3-1
Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism. Emphasis is on conceptual understanding that changes in genetic material may result in making different proteins. Assessment does not include specific changes at the molecular level, mechanisms for protein synthesis, or specific types of mutations.
NGSSHS-LS1-1
Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins, which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells. Assessment does not include identification of specific cell or tissue types, whole body systems, specific protein structures and functions, or the biochemistry of protein synthesis.
