What educators are saying

My students were having a bit of a hard time with maps. I decided to use this resource to practice creating and analyzing aspects of maps to build their understanding.
This was very helpful to review landforms with the students. I will use it again later this year with 8th grade to review for state exam.

Learning Objective

Students will demonstrate an understanding of political and physical geography and map skills by creating a fact booklet. They will create an original country based around a common theme, writing its history and drawing a map to scale.

Description

Are you looking for a project-based learning activity for GEOGRAPHY or MAP SKILLS in your Social Studies classroom? Or an engaging way to blend Social Studies with ELA? This Make Your Own Country project will enthrall your students as they make a country based on what they know and believe should exist! A perfect Project Based Learning experience for the end of the year!

The PBL has students using geography, writing, and art.  Students review map skills by creating a unique country with 20 landforms and bodies of water, all built around a central theme.  Social Studies joins ELA when they write that country’s history.

Who wouldn't want to live in “Cheesyland,” “StarWarstopia,” or “Foxington”?

"My students loved this more than I ever could have imagined!! I used this as a culmination activity after we finished studying human geography. Students are asked to choose a theme. The country they create is based on their theme. Creating maps, flags, a culture, etc. all related to their chosen theme. They loved it. It has been a long time since I have been so satisfied with final products created by students, but this activity did it!! Two thumbs up!"
