Description

This worksheet contains 20 questions over the laws of exponents- product and quotient rules. Questions are all algebra expressions and will not give any negative exponent answers.

The questions on this worksheet are scaffolded intentionally to gradually increase in difficulty:

  • no coefficients
  • invisible exponent of 1
  • coefficients in front of powers
  • coefficients and invisible exponents
  • 2 variables with no coefficients (i.e. "x" and "y")
  • 2 variables with invisible exponents
  • 2 variables with coefficients in front
  • 2 variables with coefficients and invisible exponents

Answer key is included. Formulas are also in the footnote.

Explain how the definition of the meaning of rational exponents follows from extending the properties of integer exponents to those values, allowing for a notation for radicals in terms of rational exponents. For example, we define 5 to the 1/3 power to be the cube root of 5 because we want (5 to the 1/3 power)³ = 5 to the (1/3)(3) power to hold, so (5 to the 1/3 power)³ must equal 5.
Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.
