Problem Solving Tasks

This product was intended to help students to meet the Common Core “Standards for Mathematical Practice”. I wanted to expose my own students to problems that went beyond basic word problems. I wanted to challenge them and get them to think about how they solve mathematical problems, using a variety of strategies.

What’s Included?
- This product contains 50 Mixed Problem Solving Tasks.
- The first page includes the task and work space.
- The second page is the same for each task and should copied onto the back of the first. This is where students will record their answers and explanations. At the bottom is a rubric for scoring each problem solving task.
- This product also includes a handout on “Problem Solving Procedures” to guide students when working on these tasks.

How to use this product...
- These problem solving tasks can be used as a teaching tool. -
- Model and practice with students whole-group or in small groups.
- You can also use these in group settings, in which students work together to solve the problems.
- Or use these problem solving tasks as individual assessments, for homework, or classwork.
- There are 2 to 4 of each type of problem, giving students repeated practice with each type.
