Description
What is it?
This is a simplified self-assessment I created so my grade 1 and 2 students can assess their learning skills. The statements put each learning skill in child-friendly language. I focused specifically on what I think is reasonable to expect of primary students by the end of October. I included three different faces for the students to circle or colour to indicate how well they feel they demonstrate each specific skill. You can use the faces to mean something like "I need to work on this," "I am okay at this," and "I am very good at this," or "I sometimes do this," "I usually do this," and "I always do this."
How and why do you use it?
I have my students assess their own learning skills so they are aware of what I am looking for and so they can set goals for improvement. Sending this assessment home is also a good way to communicate with parents and give them an idea of what they should expect on the Progress Report Card. I also use the self-assessments as an additional piece of information when I am determining each student's letter grades.
