Description

We all share common hopes, dreams, feelings, and abilities no matter what ethnicity, nationality, gender, or group we belong to. That message is the key take-away from this primary GATE unit. As such, this unit is a social-emotional unit with NACG standards . . . but much more:

Primary GATE best Practices with a Social-Emotional Emphasis

· Critical Thinking

· Language and Reading

· Creativity

· Science

We use Clare Turlay Newberry’s Caldecott Honor book, Marshmallow, as our vehicle. We also use Lisa Markle’s What if you had Animal Ears for a science lesson, but that book is optional. Both can most likely be found in your library.

We use the same Portable Gifted and Talented formula for primary GATE as always: participatory reading, vocabulary in context, critical thinking questions, creativity, and hands-on explorations and applications.

Active NAGC Developmental Standards

1.1. Self-Understanding. Students with gifts and talents demonstrate self-knowledge with respect to their interests, strengths, identities, and needs in socio-emotional development and in intellectual, academic, creative, leadership, and artistic domains.

1.2. Self-Understanding. Students with gifts and talents demonstrate understanding of and respect for similarities and differences between themselves and their peer group and others in the general population.
