Description
Students learn about 5 of America's forgotten presidents for Presidents' Day by reading a page of text on Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan, and B. Harrison and answer 3 questions on each president. They will also pick who they believe is the 5th forgotten president (list provided of presidents to choose from--this part of the activity might require access to research materials). They then answer 4 conclusion questions. An answer key is not provided because virtually every question is opinion and interpretation based. This would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--Why do you think these presidents are considered forgotten or forgettable? How can history forget people?
--How was Pierce’s presidency affected by the possibility of expansion and land acquisition?
--Explain what a political war would have been.
--What might Harrison have meant when he called America a “billion dollar country?”
--Explain any disparity between Harrison’s views of black Americans and Native Americans. What do you think accounted for that?
