Why are scissor skills so important?
- Builds fine motor strength - Cutting allows a child to build the hand muscles using the open and close motion. These muscles are used for doing everyday things such as writing, drawing, brushing teeth, using a fork or spoon, and even getting dressed.
- Improve focus and attention - Cutting out shapes takes concentration and attention to details. These skills are necessary for success not only in the classroom, but in everyday life. The ability to hold focus is essential for reading books, listening to directions, and able to hold longer periods of sitting in a chair.
- Develop hand eye coordination - Cutting requires children to use their eyes and hands in unison. Hand-eye coordination is important for zipping a jacket or pants, eating with a fork or spoon, and catching/throwing balls.
- Increase bilateral coordination - When you are cutting, you use both sides of the body tat the same time while each hands performing its own task. The child must hold the paper with one hand while the other hand is opening and closing the scissors while moving in a forward direction to make the cut. Bilateral coordination is needed for tasks such as opening an envelope, zipping up a coat, or washing dishes.
If you are starting off the year with distance learning, these cutting worksheets are a great resource to send home to your students. When/if students return back to the classroom, it will be a seamless transition to resume their cutting practice. It's perfect for both distance learning and in class use.
Before becoming a teacher, I was a graphic designer for Disney (specializing in typography and layout). Many other cutting practice worksheets out there do not meet the appropriate size, scale, spacing, and proportions needed for success with proper fine motor skill development. For our youngest learners, the actual design of the worksheet is as important as the content. I designed these scissor skill worksheets to include straight lines in varied lengths with stopping points - ideal for children learning to cut paper.
