Description

If you are a third, fourth, or fifth-grade teacher looking for effective word study lessons that will help your students learn about the most common prefixes and suffixes, you can stop your scroll and grab this resource. Teaching your students the 20 most common prefixes and 20 most common suffixes is one of the most effective uses of your word study instruction.

When students have knowledge of the most common prefixes and suffixes, it will help them expand and grow their vocabulary. They will have word-learning tools to help them figure out what unfamiliar words mean.

But teaching the most common prefixes and suffixes also helps students successfully read and spell multisyllabic words.

LET’S BREAK DOWN EACH ELEMENT:

  • Scripted Teacher Lesson Plans: Each lesson plan includes the following sections: Introduce & Explain, Teach & Model, Extra Model, Guided Practice Examples, Optional Independent Practice Assignment & Closure. The lesson plans give you the language to help clearly introduce and explain each affix during a word study lesson.
  • Anchor Charts: Each lesson includes a colorful anchor chart. If you don’t want to use the teaching slides, you could display the anchor chart under a document camera to help guide your lesson. You could also post this in your classroom after the lesson or give students a copy to place in their folders.
  • Google Slide Set For Each Lesson: Each lesson includes 6 slides you can use to introduce, model, and practice reading sentences with each focus affix. These slides make it really easy to keep kids engaged in the lesson and make planning the teaching portion of your word study lessons super quick and easy.  (There are over 200+ slides included in this bundle.)
  • Student Practice Pages: Each of the prefix and suffix lessons includes two student practice pages. On these pages, students will be given the opportunity to read and break apart words with the focus affix. They also get a chance to read sentences and a short decodable paragraph that includes words with the focus affix. You can assign the entire practice set at one time or have students complete one section per day throughout the week.

  • Answer Key: An answer key is included.

Prep is quick and easy... Just print the lesson you want to teach, and you're all set to teach your word study lesson.

HOW TO USE THESE LESSONS IN YOUR CLASSROOM:

  • You can teach these lessons on prefixes and suffixes during your whole group word study lessons.
  • You can use these lessons during small group instruction to support students who need help reading multi-syllabic words.
  • You can use these lessons to spiral through previously taught word-study skills at the start of the year.
