Description

**NEWLY UPDATED in 4/2022 with more prefixes, affixes, additional sentence activities, and divided prefix sort and suffix sort.**

Recognizing prefixes and suffixes is such an essential skill for reading and especially for beginning to decode multi-syllabic words! Help your students not only recognize when they see prefixes or suffixes in words, but also recognize when they're being used correctly with this 54-page pack!

With the 20 affix sorts (11 prefix, 9 suffix), students will begin to understand when an affix is being used to change a word's meaning versus when it's coincidentally part of a word's structure. For example, "de-" in the word "defense" is not actually an affix- but many students don't recognize this when they're first starting out. Students will have plenty of chances to practice this skill by working directly with each affix when they sort sample words into "Prefix"/"Not a Prefix" or "Suffix"/"Not a Suffix" groups.

Then, once they've understood how an affix affects a root word to alter the meaning, allow them to put their knowledge to the test with this word choice sentence activity. Students simply read a sentence and the given base word with two affixes and decide which word will make the sentence make sense.

Also included- an option for early finishers, enrichment, or centers: Affix Memory with each of the Prefixes and Suffixes used in the pack!

Prefixes Used: Re-, Pre-, Mis-, De-, Un-, Bi-, Il-, En-, Im-, In-, Dis-

Suffixes Used: -est, -er, -ing, -ish, -ly, -ic, -ship, -able, -al
