What educators are saying

I like to use these cards with pairs working to answer as many of the questions as they can correctly. At the end of the time, I award prizes to the three top teams.
My students were really struggling with point of view, so this was super helpful for them. It was also very engaging!

Description

Point of View Task Cards: This set of 24 task cards will give your upper elementary students an opportunity to practice reading a passage and identifying the point of view used by the author. Students will differentiate between four common points of view: first person, second person, third person limited, and third person omniscient. Each task card consists of an engaging fiction passage and four multiple-choice options.

First Person

Second Person

Third Person Limited

Third Person Omniscient

If you have your students use the traditional answer sheet, they will complete the following steps as they work through each task card:

  1. They will read the short fiction passage.
  2. They will select their answer and record it on their answer sheet.
  3. They will justify their answer by writing a brief explanation of how they determined the correct answer.

Like most of my task card sets, the resource contains a bonus game-like answer sheet in addition to the more traditional recording sheet. Many teachers report posting the task cards around the room to give their students an opportunity to get up and walk around the room. Others say that they use these as a whole class formative activity where they place a task card under their doc cam, and then have students write their chosen answer on whiteboards. Both activities provide an engaging alternative to a traditional worksheet activity!

********This resource is available in three formats:

  1. Traditional Printables- Print the PDF and distribute paper task cards and recording sheets.
  2. Easel Activity- With this digital format, there is one task card per slide. Students can complete this activity on a device. Students read each passage and identify the point of view used by the author. This has a multiple-choice format, and students click on the button that displays the correct answer. No checking is necessary! When your students turn it in, you will see their score and the number of attempts they made on each card.
  3. Easel Assessment- Students complete this self-grading quiz on a device, as well. After reading each passage, students select the point of view from a list of four possible answer choices. With this option, the teacher chooses whether or not his or her students receive immediate feedback.

If you have students who struggle with identifying the correct point of view, I highly recommend my "Point of View Flow Chart". This tool has proven to be extremely useful for my struggling students!

Here's what teachers like you had to say about using these task cards with their students:

⭐️ Michelle B. said, "I love using these Point of View cards for review days. My students love to get up and walk around the room finding these cards. It's nice to break up the monotony of the traditional ELA class."

⭐️ Nancy N. said, "In reviewing for state testing, I was looking for something that would be engaging and not just pencil paper. I set these up in a table grouping...the students helped each other and by the time I picked it up, almost all were experts."

⭐️ TeachinginaTee said, "My students were really struggling with point of view, so this was super helpful for them. It was also very engaging!"

⭐️ Lisa J. said, "I love task cards and these are perfect for this standard. The students spend time moving around the room, reading and answering on-topic questions. Perfect for my active fifth graders."
