Description

This fully editable packet is ready to use to celebrate Women's History Month with your middle school students through classic poetry - or, use it at any point during the school year to diversify your poetry curriculum and include important female voices and historical events and topics that relate to gender equality and women's rights. This lesson plan guides students through a Do Now, Notes about mood, imagery, and theme, and then has students analyze a classic poem together as a whole class before splitting into small groups to read and discuss a second poem by a famous female poet. Students will first discuss the poem in small groups, and then share their takeaways in new groups with other class mates. Bring the class back together to share major takeaways and common themes.

For homework, students will complete a creative homework assignment that asks them to write their own poem!

Use these resources for Women's History Month in your middle school ELA classroom to have a thoughtful and engaging discussion about the importance of gender, identity, resilience and optimism.
