Description

This comprehensive unit on the reading, writing and performance of poetry is a student and teacher favorite! It's 50 pages of poetry fun!

This Common Core aligned unit has the following:

-Essential Questions

-A list 10 unit appropriate I Can statements

-Unit vocabulary and definitions with suggestions of mini-unit pairings

-List of Common Core standards and the aligning lessons/activities for Grades 4 and 5

-A comprehensive list of assessments and materials needed for the unit

-A poetry pre-test and answer key

-Extensive list of suggested book titles

-An in-depth suggested schedule outline broken into day-by-day lesson plans

-Eight mini-lessons on the reading and writing of poetry (lessons include What Poets Do..., autobiographical poems, formula poetry with Tanka, Haiku, Diamante and Shape poems, free verse, rhyming poetry, letter poems, white space/line breaks, two-voice poetry and meter)

-Peeling the Poetry guide to help students peel back the layers of poetry

-Ideas and handouts for the creation of poetry books, performances and celebrations including a Traveling Poetry Troupe and Poetry Cafe

-Self-reflection piece

While this unit is 95 percent completed for you, there are a few instances where you will need to find a specified poem (or select a personal favorite) as I cannot include them due to copyright limitations.

This unit has been used in my own classroom with GREAT success for several years. It truly makes poetry come alive for children and is my students' favorite unit of the year. Please let me know if you have any questions - I would be happy to answer them!
