Description

This exciting project based learning unit outline challenges students to research and create their own unique music podcast episode based on a music related topic of their choosing!

The 10-15 class period unit project helps scaffold student analysis of different musical styles, genres, and time periods, with the end result being a student generated podcast episode based on their research.

A 7-part project outline is complete with guiding questions for student response that scaffold active music engagement and investigation. Additionally, these questions form the script and structure of the student's podcast episode.

An exciting, cross curricular opportunity to combine music history, technology, and podcasting all in one interactive project!

The outline is available in both .docx and .pptx format, making it perfect for any learning management system used in class or through virtual learning. The project outlines are also able to be edited and adapted for any music classroom.

The resource includes several helpful hints for recording a podcast using SoundTrap, a free online DAW that can be used by students to record and edit their work. This project can incorporate any available recording software, including BandLab (free) and Garageband.

A favorite project for middle/high school students of all ability levels and curricular goals!

The project follows the NAfME Music Standards for Listening, Responding, Creating & Connecting.

Project Notes (Included in .docx file):
-This project can be completed as a short or long term project.  Each section generally takes a 45-minute class period for students to research and compile their findings.

-Students can script their responses along the way during each section, or at the end before recording.  Scripting can be as formal/informal as you choose.

-The website Padlet works well as a place for students to compile their work for each section.  “A Student Guide to Creating a Padlet” is a great resource to help students set up and use Padlet.

-This description uses the website SoundTrap as the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) for students to record their podcast episode.  You can use any recording software available to students for this step (Garageband, BandLab, Audacity, etc).

-You can choose to have students listen and respond to their classmates work.
