What educators are saying

This was a great resource to use to review plot. I liked that the passage was a little longer because my students need that. It was cute passage. We are reading Harry Potter and they felt like this was a new version.

Learning Objective

After reading a short story, students will identify the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

Description

Do your students need practice reading a story and identifying story elements including the plot, the setting, and the theme? This engaging foldable activity puts a fun spin on identifying these plot elements. Since the story characters are wizards, it makes for a great Halloween activity. However, the story does not reference Halloween, and thus can be used at any time throughout the school year! After reading the story, students identify the setting and theme of the story. They also identify each plot element (introduction/exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution). When the foldable is assembled, the plot elements expand into one large plot diagram.

HERE'S WHAT YOU GET:

  • A short story called "Wesley Wormley and the Potion Commotion"- I wrote this story with my upper elementary students in mind (4th and 5th grade students).
  • Three worksheets that form the foldable activity- The worksheets contain nine panels. After reading the story, students identify the setting, introduction/exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, and theme. As a bonus activity, on the final panel, students write their own potion for fun!
  • Answer keys
  • Student-friendly instructions (with photos!!) that detail how to assemble the foldable
  • Additional notes for the teacher with explanations on how to prepare the booklet and materials that must be gathered.

Here's what teachers like you have to say about this activity:

  • Tara G. said, "My kiddos loved, loved, loved this activity!!! Lesson was definitely successful, and it's always nice when you see the kids enjoying the learning process!!!!!"

  • Laura F. said, "This activity is a must when teaching theme and plot!"

  • Jessica O. said, "My students really enjoyed this and were completely engaged!"

  • H.B. said, "My students really enjoyed the short story, and the activity afterwards was a great way to check for understanding and help my students understand how to identify the plot elements in a fictional text. My students really enjoyed creating their own potions as well! Thank you for this amazing resource!"

**IMPORTANT NOTE: This story is very similar to one of the scripts in my Halloween Readers' Theater BUNDLE resource. This is intentional! I will use BOTH of these resources in my classroom in October. My students will complete this foldable the week BEFORE Halloween, and then during Halloween week, they will do the Readers' Theater activities. Once the Readers' Theater is performed, we will, as a class, COMPARE and CONTRAST stories! (The setting and theme are the same, but the plot is a bit different!)
