What educators are saying

Great addition to our science curriculum. Our curr. does not have much about plants in it so this was very useful.

Description

This complete integrated first grade science and literacy unit is based on the Next Generation Science Standard for Structure, Function, and Information Processing (specifically dealing with plants). It covers the following:

Big Ideas/Standards:
Plants need nutrients, light, space, and water to grow (NGSS K_LS 1.1 Organization for Energy Matter and Flow in Organisms).
Plants have different parts that help them survive and grow (NGSS 1-LS 1.A Structure and Function).
Plant parts have daily functions that help them survive (NGSS 1-LS 1.D Information Processing).
Adult plants have an offspring (NGSS 1-LS 1.B Growth and Development of Organism).
A plant’s offspring is like, but not exactly like an adult (NGSS 1-LS 3.A Inheritance of Traits).
Even plants that are the same type can have differences (NGSS 1-LS 3.B Variation of Traits).
Design a solution to a problem using how animals use their external parts (NGSS 1-LS1-1)

The unit includes:

*Vocabulary cards (Choice of real photos and clip art images)
*I can statements (purpose)
*Narrative Input Chart Story to introduce unit
*A 9 page student book that gives information while teaching text features of informational text. The topics in the student book are: what plants need, plant parts, plant adaptations, adult and offspring, variation of traits, how plants and animals help each other, and how plants eat (photosynthesis)
*Each topic has a Discover Science experiment/investigation/activity that has a hands on element to teach the information. Each investigation has differentiated pages so that you can assemble the science notebook according to level.
*Another student book discussing plant protection.
*A design investigation that students participate in after studying various protective structures and functions of plants. They design a solution to a given problem using what they learned about plant protection.
*Writing prompts
*A whole writing sequence, broken down simply, where kids write an article using the text features highlighted in the unit: Title, headings, text boxes, captions, photographs
*Comprehension pages
*Note taking pages
*QR Codes and links
*Text feature wall charts posters
*Text features scavenger hunt
*Text features find your partner/center
*Build an article game that teaches the students the parts of an article
*Craftivity project where students write about and build a flower. This also teaches point of view.

This unit has a lot!
