What educators are saying

My students have enjoyed discovering more about specific planets and did an outstanding job writing their stories.
I use this for ninth graders, so I modify it a bit. This is a great way for them to create presentations on a space topic, but in a more creative way. We are next to our elementary school so my students read their books to the younger kids and they both have so much fun with it!

Description

Your students will love writing a fun children's book for this Planet Research Project! Their children’s book will tell and illustrate a fictional story taking place on a planet. You can choose to keep the planet choices those within our solar system (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto?) and/or you can allow your students to choose other planets outside of our solar system that have been discovered. Some of my students LOVE that they can choose ‘the Diamond Planet’ or Gliese 581g, etc. because it really gets them excited coming up with a storyline. Some students are more comfortable choosing a planet within our solar system that they already know a little bit about.

This product includes both the print version and the Google Docs digital version so you can use it in either way, or blended!

This project includes teacher directions for facilitating the project, the student directions, a student checklist to help chunk the assignment, research pages, a story map, a storyboard to help the students to plan pictures and text/dialogue, and the detailed grading rubric.

My students let their imaginations run wild and they get so creative. This helps them to "own" the planet and really understand it.

Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system. Emphasis is on the analysis of data from Earth-based instruments, space-based telescopes, and spacecraft to determine similarities and differences among solar system objects. Examples of scale properties include the sizes of an object’s layers (such as crust and atmosphere), surface features (such as volcanoes), and orbital radius. Examples of data include statistical information, drawings and photographs, and models. Assessment does not include recalling facts about properties of the planets and other solar system bodies.
