What educators are saying

This is such a fun resource to use! I love using this graphic organizer for my students to have a fun day, but we're still working on academic goals!
I used this with a low ability year 8 class. It is a good product and visually appealing. My class found the prompts quite easy and we had to dig deeper. The resource is probably better suited to upper primary.

Description

Short film workshops are the most effective and engaging way for students to learn about literary elements. This workshop for DUSTIN focuses on: PERSONIFICATION, CHARACTER, INFERENCE, SETTING, AND FORESHADOWING. Students will absolutely LOVE it!

Film Summary: In this film, an adorable dog is perplexed because he gets an unexpected roommate, a robot floor cleaner that sweeps up all of the table crumbs that he had hoped to eat. Dustin feels he is being replaced, until he realizes this robot makes a great play buddy!

The writer cleverly personifies the robot making this the perfect film for introducing and/or reviewing PERSONIFICATION. Students also learn how to understand characters through inferencing and foreshadowing.

Includes Activities For:

✔ PERSONIFICATION-is the main literary focus

✔ Character

✔ Foreshadowing

✔ Setting

✔ Inferencing

✔ANSWERS AND SAMPLE RESPONSES INCLUDED FOR EVERYTHING

WHY TEACH WITH SHORT FILMS? Allowing students to learn about literary elements using short films alleviates some learning blocks that struggling readers and students with attention disorders experience. Separating knowledge of literature from reading comprehension helps students learn more effectively and enjoyably, which will ultimately improve reading skills. Students of all levels benefit from learning in manageable chunks.

NOTE- Each of my Pixar Workshops has a special culminating activity. In this short film, the creator hides Easter eggs (symbols, references, or clues) in the film. This creator cleverly hid Easter eggs to symbolize the Western film High Noon because Dustin and the robot floor cleaner has a "show down." Students will love looking for the hidden Easter eggs.

NOTE: This digital workshop was SPECIFICALLY designed for Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, or any other major LMS platform. This means the slides are interactive and students can work directly on them. It also means it is sized specifically for student interactivity. This workshop is NOT a pdf worksheet that has simply been imported to Google. Also, you will not have to give access to your Google Drive to access this resource. You will get your own link.
