⭐Maximal oppositions include word pairs that have multiple feature contrasts. Features can differ on place, manner, and voicing. The oppositions contrast only two sounds. A sound the child correctly produces is compared to a maximally different one. Use them similarly to minimal pairs. Have the child say both words in the pair. Show a communicative confusion if both words are said the same.
✅ Maximal pairs are best used for moderate/severe children. It is meant to change the child’s entire phonological system because research shows it promotes generalization. (Research: Gierut, 2007)

•Sound/letter cards are provided for each pair for receptive/discrimination tasks.
Print pages 3&4, cut apart pairs (/k, r/, /g, f/, etc.), and laminate for durability, if desired. Use during discrimination where the child must listen for the identified target sound produced by the clinician.
•Pages 5&6 include cover cards for decks. Use as the top card for each maximal pair deck, if desired.
•Page 35 includes word lists for all maximal pairs.
The following maximal pairs are included for therapy drill/practice as well as home practice. Print, cut, and laminate (if desired) maximal pair cards. Punch holes and combine like pairs on a ring (not included). Print worksheets and place in sheet protectors (if desired) or copy in black and white for home practice.
