What educators are saying

We love engaging centers in my class. The students enjoyed it and it was easy to explain and for the students to be independent with it.
My students love to get up and "hunt" for words. So much more engaging then the traditional word sorts. It's also a great activity for students to just get out of their seats and move.

    Description

These phonics and fluency word hunt and sort activities are fun and simple but so important! Tape the words around the classroom for a fun scavenger hunt, use in literacy stations, or let targeted small reading groups find the pattern, sort the words, then write and read the words. The opportunities are endless.

    Why word sorts?

In my classroom, my goal is for my students to become fluent readers and writers. I need them to have quick recognition of words so they can begin to focus their attention on making meaning. When my students have the opportunity to compare and contrast words they begin to look for phonics patterns and regularities within the words. Once a phonics pattern is learned, the goal is for my students to apply what they know about the spelling pattern to unknown words. Overall, multiple hands-on opportunities to practice reading, writing, and building word recognition is needed so that my students can construct a meaningful understanding of how words work and READ FLUENTLY!
