Phlebotomy Equipment Stations

Phlebotomy equipment used to be one of the lessons I dreaded teaching the most. Many of my students would lose focus because it seemed tedious and boring and they felt like they already knew the content, but would miss many of the most important facts they really needed to know for their phlebotomy certification exam. I started this stations activity and it changed this lesson. When my students finish the stations I review them out loud and they KNOW the most important content. I hope this stations activity helps you introduce this material to your students as well.

You can choose to present in many different ways, but this is what I do in my classroom:

• Print the Stations 1-7 pages including the extra two pages for Station 7 in color if possible.
• Print the Student Pages in black and white and make 1-2 sided copies.
• At each of the 7 stations, set out any equipment you have on hand that matches up to the stations - open a few ETS needles and have one safety engaged and the other recapped at station 2- it really helps.
• Group your students- I prefer to group my kids in like groups so that I can spend most of the stations time with my weakest groups.
• I let students go from station to station with their groups in any order they choose. I like to set 5 minute timers. I tell kids if they need to go back to a station after everyone is finished they can. Station 7 takes the longest.

Please note there are different orders of draw. I chose to use the NHA order of draw, as this is the certification test my students use.
