What educators are saying

This was an amazing art lesson that produced great artwork to post in the hallways and show off to the rest of the school. Students really loved learning about this artist. This craft asked students to follow to a certain point but also gave them room for their own creativity. Recommend!
The perfect way to make STEM into STEAM. such a great design challenge and the students absolutely loved it. Thank you so much!

Description

I wanted to put some pep into our art steps and stumbled on Pete Cromer. He is inspired by the OPTIMISTIC qualities in people and animals... everyone needs some joy and optimism, especially right now! Our kids have LOVED this project and the smiles... oh, the SMILES everywhere! My F2F kiddos are grinning and quietly giggling through their quiet focus, our virtual kiddos are holding theirs up so proudly and experiencing success, even when piecing together materials for this project from home... it just makes my teacher heart smile to no end!

The VIDEO FILES (2 total: 1 video for painting/collage paper prep and 1 video for collage steps) are included in this lesson for easy downloading, along with a full lesson plan in Word for easy editing. Unlisted Youtube video links are also included in the lesson plan file. You can use the video for clarification, or do as I do and just screen-share the video to play for your F2F and virtual students.

Materials:

-Thick white paper suitable for painting and collage techniques (thick sulphite paper, watercolor paper or Bristol would work).

-Solid piece of construction paper, any color, for background

-Construction paper ‘scraps’ or smaller pieces for collage options, including white and black for the eye

-Pencil

-Scissors

-Glue (glue stick can work, but liquid glue is ideal)

-Watercolor paints and paintbrush (this project can be created with other coloring materials, but watercolor paints are ideal for little ‘surprises’ with exciting watercolor techniques)

-OPTIONAL: Markers (Crayola-type markers can be used with water and a paintbrush for a fun ‘paint’ technique!), Crayons, Color Pencils, Pastels

-OPTIONAL: Old giftcard or small piece of matboard or cardboard with a straight edge (for a fun paint ‘pulling’ technique)

-OPTIONAL: Extra white paper scraps for creating additional ‘painted papers’ for collage

INCLUDED in this ZIP file: 2 VIDEO FILES for downloading, Lesson Plan in Word format (including materials list, Learning Targets, sample standards from nationalartsstandards.org, grading rubric, detailed written instructions as well as instructions in photos, unlisted Youtube links to the same videos included in the file).
