What educators are saying
Description
My family recently had the pleasure of adopting a cat from a rescue in our community. It was such a fun and rewarding experience for our entire family. We had to go through quite a few steps before we could bring our new pet home.
This made me realize what a great real-world project this would make for students. This project walks students through the process of pet adoption, from completing an application, to preparing for a new pet, and even a final “interview”!
This Adopt-a-Pet Project includes the following activities:
- Choose a Pet: Students choose the pet they want to adopt, name their pet, and write a brief paragraph about the pet's physical traits and personality.
- Adoption Application: Students complete an application that involves sharing character traits that would make them good pet owners, as well as a paragraph about the home they plan to provide for their new pet.
- Pet Research: Students read a passage and answer comprehension questions about caring for their new pets.
- Shop for Pet: Students are provided with a shopping list for their pets and then use a ”Supply Catalog” to “shop” for their pet. They will fill out a receipt for their purchases and find the total. (Teachers can choose from 3 different price options: whole numbers, simple decimals, or more complex decimals)
- Write a Letter: Students write a final opinion letter to the rescue about why they think they would me good pet owners.
- Final Interview: Students are provided with a list of interview questions pa, and pair up with a classmate to interview each other about being pet owners.
- Adoption Time: Once students have completed all of the required tasks, it’s ADOPTION TIME! A certificate is included and teachers can hold a final adoption ceremony!
Everything you need to implement this project is included! You can choose from color or black and white pages for printing. You may choose to purchase stuffed animals or figurines for students to "adopt". However, you could also just stick with the pet cards!
*Teacher directions and a project prep checklist are also included!
