What educators are saying

This is one of my favourite writing activities for the whole school year! It allows students to showcase their creativity and we make a friendly competition out of it by voting for our top 3 sweaters!
My class had a BLAST completing this project. It can be tied into so many content areas. This also allowed my class to get more comfortable with public speaking, as I had them present their projects to the class. They were having so much fun and did not want it to end.

Description

Holiday Sweater Contest: Help your students develop their persuasive writing skills with this creative writing and art project! The task involves designing a holiday sweater for a vintage department store contest. After designing, students will use persuasive writing to convince the judges why their design deserves to win the grand prize.

This resource includes:

  • Detailed lesson plans for two days (or stretch it out over several days)
  • Small group warm-up activity to engage students and review persuasive writing skills
  • Engaging project assignment poster explaining the "contest" to students
  • Student planning and project pages
  • Grading rubrics
  • Example of the completed project

You can finish this activity in one to three class periods depending on your available time. I have included a suggested lesson plan sequence for two days. Students complete a planning page after a fun small group activity to review persuasive writing. Completing the planning page will allow you to assess their understanding of persuasive writing before beginning the final project.

The final project choices are differentiated. The first option has room for the sweater design and writing all on one page. For the second option, students draw their sweater designs on a separate half-size sheet of paper. They can use the matching lined paper to write, or students can type the final project.

You can choose to grade the planning page and project page as one grade together or only grade the finished writing project (final project page). I created grading rubrics for both choices!

Please check the detailed previews (PDF and Video) for more information. Thank you for considering the Holiday Sweater Project for your students!
