This Smartboard writing unit takes students through a step by step process to help them successfully write a personal essay. Here are the steps students are taken through:

1) Students begin by brainstorming themes and issues in their life 2) Students fill out a people/issues/moments chart
3) Students learn how to write a thesis
4) Students write an idea/claim/argument
5) Students learn how to "grow" ideas and "push their thinking"
6) Students organize their essay
7) Students look at examples of personal essays (written by both teachers and students)
8) Students learn how to write introductions and conclusions
9) Students add transitions words to their essay
