Description

Students will research products that contain various elements of the periodic table and make a scrapbook of their findings. They will also review the major groups of the periodic table, and learn more about the atomic world around them! The 7 page scrapbook template packet and 2 page grading rubric are included.

My 11th grade Chemistry students complete this project while we are learning about the periodic table, but it would be appropriate for any 7th-12th grade science student learning about chemistry. I give my students two days in class to work on this project. Additional work is completed as homework.

Before This Lesson

*Students should be familiar with the names of the major periodic table groups (alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, halogens, and noble gases).

*Students should know how to properly write chemical formulas

Project Options

*Students may add pictures if you provide them with a digital format of this document

*Students may cut and paste photos onto printed packets

*Students may find their pictures online or in magazines. They also have the options of taking at least five of the photos themselves, and if they choose this route they will get 3 extra credit points.

Materials

*Computers or electronic devices for conducting research and finding photos

*Magazines (if cutting and pasting photos)

*Devices to take photos on (if they are taking their own photographs)
