What educators are saying

My students loved using this resource. This is a fun and engaging way for students to learn their Pepeha. I also love how it is differentiated for students who are Tangata Whenua.
My students loved using this resources to create their own pepehas. Simple for both them and I to follow and many different options to choose from.

Description

Pepeha / Mihi resource for students in New Zealand classrooms.

GREAT FOR:

  • Back to School (getting to know me)
  • Maori language week
  • Te Reo lessons
  • Social Studies unit
  • Kiwiana unit

The pepeha is written on one side and a picture is coloured / drawn on the other side. Hang whatever you wish from the bottom (or cut it off if you don't want to hang anything).

Different text options are included to allow you to customise the pepeha according to the tikanga in your area.

THE PEPEHA (version A):

  • Maunga (mountain)
  • Awa (river)
  • Waka (canoe)
  • Marae (gathering place)
  • Kura (school)
  • Where I'm from
  • Matua (father)
  • Whaea (mother)
  • My name

Version B is the same as above but has iwi (tribe) instead of kura (school).

A blank template as well as templates with lines (10, 9, 8, 7, 6), have been included if the above format does not suit you.

INCLUDED:

  • 5 different front templates (click on preview above to view)
  • 3 different back templates (click on preview above to view)
  • Drafting template for version A and B (shown above)
  • Teacher notes
  • Construction instructions

PUTTING IT TOGETHER:

Glue the front and back together with a thin piece of cardboard in between, or laminate together.

EXAMPLES OF THINGS TO HANG:

  • feather, beads, pompoms, buttons, etc (see what you have in your craft supplies)
  • shells (eg small pieces of paua shell, small beach shells)
  • pieces of a toetoe plume (or other items found in nature)
  • 'All about me' - photos, words, pictures, facts
  • Maori vocabulary (word on one side and meaning on the other)

Made on A4 size paper.
