Penguin Heart Rate Worksheet- arousal, emotional regulation, and science
- PDF
Description
The My Penguin Heart Rate worksheet was developed for children to learn about how activities can impact heart rates. It is best used with a penguin pulse oximeter (available on Amazon or Walmart), but it can easily be used with any pulse oximeter to measure heart rate. It is a fun way to learn about the body, arousal, interoception, and emotion regulation.
I have used it with children as young as kindergarten and up to fourth grade in a one-on-one clinic setting. Some kids don't like to practice coping strategies, but this is a fun way to "test" the effects of deep breathing (2 minutes of deep breathing are embedded into the activity in one-minute increments). Each child came away from the activity with new excitement about their body!
Targeted Skills:
- Interoception & Body Awareness
- Arousal Regulation
- Emotional Regulation
- Science
What's included?
- 2 worksheets
- Activity: tracking heart rate after specific activities (e.g., at rest, after deep breathing, after jumping jacks, etc.)
- Questions to check understanding (e.g., what was your highest heart rate? what was your lowest? How does your body feel when your heart rate is high?)
