What educators are saying

Thank you for this great resource as we begin to build our Cross-Age Tutoring program. I adapted as needed to fit my own program needs, but it was a great investment to start building capacity to our student leaders/tutors.

Description

Do you work with peer tutors, cross-age tutors, TAs, or instructional aides at your school? Research shows that providing quality training is essential. Building Student Success: A Training Workbook for Tutors and Instructional Aides is a 49-page workbook designed to provide that training. The topics contained in this peer tutoring and instructional aide handbook have been carefully selected to address the key elements identified by research as being critical to quality tutor and paraprofessional instruction. Topics covered include:

  • Creating and maintaining positive rapport based on respect
  • Working effectively with students of varying abilities
  • Keeping students focused and attentive
  • Asking questions that stimulate creative thinking, problem-solving, and deeper learning
  • Motivating and encouraging students
  • Providing students with clear and appropriate feedback
  • Teaching study skills
  • Understanding student differences including those who are second language learners and those with disabilities or special needs
  • Fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students
  • Maintaining appropriate boundaries, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • Adhering to a tutor/instructional aide code of ethics

This peer tutoring and instructional aide training workbook presents information in a user-friendly manner. While it contains some basic instructional strategies for teaching math, improving writing, improving comprehension, etc., it does not teach how to tutor in specific content areas. Rather, the focus is on presenting the “soft skills” needed to work successfully as a tutor or instructional aide.

Study questions are provided at the end of each section to review content and encourage reflection. This peer tutoring training workbook also contains an assessment/skills inventory tool, goal development sheets, and suggested group activities should you wish to use them. You can structure group discussions around the topics presented if you are facilitating a peer tutoring or cross-age tutoring program or you can simply provide the workbook to your tutors, TAs, and instructional assistants as a self-study course assigning them to read the material presented and complete the study questions.

You will also receive an 18-page Teacher's Guide containing program suggestions, notes, tips, and suggestions about using the workbook with your peer tutors and instructional aides. An answer key for the study questions as well as suggested activities and lesson plans to use during group training sessions are included.

This material is appropriate for secondary students including those in middle school, high school, and junior college. It is also appropriate for adults who are beginning as instructional aides.

Please visit my website, Teach Tutors, if you would like a summary of the research on the benefits of peer tutoring and cross-age tutoring. The website also contains information about how to create a successful peer tutoring or cross-age tutoring program at your school or organization as well as a few sample pages from the workbook.

File Compatibility: You will receive a zipped folder containing PDF documents of the Peer Tutoring and Instructional Aide Training Workbook and the Teacher's Guide. Please be sure that you are able to unzip and open PDF files before purchasing this product.

Terms of use & Copyright Information: You may use this material with your tutors, instructional aides, or TAs. Visual supports are powerful!

Teachers know how important visual supports are for helping students to learn and generalize new skills. As a speech pathologist, my colleagues and I use them with our students all the time. Please check out my visual supports for students if you are looking for helpful visual prompt cards and nonverbal supports to benefit your students.

Please feel free to visit my Teach Tutors website if you would like more information or if you wish to contact me. I am happy to help in any way possible.

Thank you very much for visiting my TPT store. I truly appreciate it.
