Paragraph Writing Settings

Looking for fun, engaging, and meaningful activities to spice up your paragraph writing block with? To help improve year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students struggling with writing? Writing paragraphs doesn't have to be hard. This paragraph writing program is both fun and effective. It involves students working together to make the most imaginative paragraph they can y following a set of ‘rules’ for the paragraph. Over a week they will work individual and within a group setting to make these paragraphs. In addition to the printable writing prompts, there are a choice of graphic organizers, rubrics and peer and self-assessments for each visual prompt. Use the one that works best for your students.

Each Writing Prompt activity includes…

✔ a unique prompt (designed to only be one paragraph but could easily be extended if desired). Prompts are more than just a sentence or two and were written to get students to really think about the topic.

✔ a choice of mind maps for collecting ideas.

✔ a space for students to write a final draft of their paragraph. Either in colour or Black and white

✔ a group rubric

✔ self-assessment and peer assessment

This PowerPoint reflects the learning for Stage 2 ( Year 3 and Year 4) but can be used whenever the need arises to either teach, reinforce or assess. There are NSW Writing Outcomes and Literacy Progressions added .

Each slide as a brief blurb about the focus activity for that week. Below is a small snippet of what it might look like, however it does go into more detail.

The PowerPoint has a visual stimulus which can be used for the initial planning without the timer.  Then with the timer it can be used for their final write.  It reminds students about the definition of a paragraph.

There is a 10 minute timer.

There is a planner for the type of paragraph writing that you might like to do ( This would be one lesson. Students can work individually or with a partner.) There is also a sheet for students to write their final paragraph .

Checklist is included to ensure that they have followed their success criteria.
