Description
This artist inspired watercolor painting lesson is perfect for middle school art students. This lesson can be taught anytime or during Black History Month to introduce your students to influential artists and heroes of Black History. This is also a perfect lesson for Women's History Month to teach your students about the struggles Jones faces as a female artist. In this lesson, students will become familiar with the importance of African Masks and identify characteristics of African Masks and apply those ideas to their painting. Students will also become more familiar with artist Lois Mailou Jones. The PowerPoint slides include: objectives, standards (describe social, ecological, economic, religious, and/or political conditions reflected in artwork. VA.68.H.1.1), vocabulary (unity, pattern, color scheme and watercolor resist), Lois Mailou Jones art critique & compare/contrast activity, Harlem Renaissance movie clips and discussion questions, reflection questions, printable rubric, step-by-step instructions, student examples and a YouTube art tutorial/demonstration to show your students. In addition, a handout for students to use when designing their African inspired mask design is included. The PDF's can be easily shared with your virtual or home based students.
