Description

Your students can find 11 “pre” words in this short story! Use it to introduce this root, or assign this story for review practice. Seeing the words in context will help students comprehend how they are used!

Highlights:

  • 11 Examples of “pre” root words: Within this story, students will find the following words:
    • prerequisite
    • predict
    • premonition
    • preview
    • precedent
    • prepare
    • prevent
    • prefer
    • preclude
    • precaution
    • predecessor
  • 1 Page Short Story: The story is only one-page long in order to keep the focus on comprehension rather than reading stamina
  • "Root Word Tree" Page: Students fill the branches of the tree with all the words they found in the story. Below the image of the tree, students take notes on word meanings
  • Answer Key included: Shows highlighted root words, definitions, and underlines figurative language
  • Additional Reading Skills Practice + BONUS Graphic Organizers: Each Root Word Story from C Frank Education also includes a simile/metaphor, for reinforcing figurative language skills, and fits the “Somebody Wanted, But, So” summarizing model or similar plot tracking techniques. Graphic organizer included for both of these activities! Great for short literary circle activities!

This resource is inspired from activities I used as a Reading Intervention teacher. I love how Greek and Latin roots can help to unlock new levels of comprehension for students. I believe your students will find it useful, too!

Suggested uses: When giving students this kind of assignment, I would provide them with the meaning of the root and have them use the story’s context to work together to match the various words using that root to their meanings. Then, they would record these definitions on the Root Word Tree page. Other times, I would have them look up the definitions of the words in order to determine the meaning of the root.
