Buy & Download now to receive: a journal entry prompt, a detailed rubric & checklist, a British Museum research resource, an instructions page, and a visually-interesting reading packet of Pliny the Younger's account of the Destruction of Pompeii. This resource is aligned to the Depth of Knowledge Bloom's Taxonomy Scale- instead of being aligned to Common Core Standards. This allows you to use it for a wide range of grade levels (6th to 12th) depending on how it is facilitated. It can be aligned to Common Core targets and to your state standards- as it involves students reading informational text as well as primary source documents in order to learn history. They must demonstrate their knowledge in a writing sample. Students also must incorporate content & academic vocabulary in their writing. Use as a summative or as an activity to support the development of critical thinking, abstract thought, and creative thinking. Also a fun way to show students how historians develop arguments about history through archaeological evidence as well as primary source accounts. The assignment helps students think from the perspective of a Roman experiencing the eruption- and they learn a bit of the Roman worldview in their reading of Pliny's account.
