Out of This World Classifying Triangles by Sides Mini Unit

Many students tend to do well with the computational components of mathematics. Unfortunately, the same pupils tend to have difficulty with thoroughly explaining how they solved the problems in written form.
As educators, we know that students being able to explain their solution processes are a crucial component to long-term retention of the mathematical concepts they need to succeed in numeracy mastery.

This mini unit deals with classifying triangles by side measurement. This study provides a week-long lesson that incorporates multiple opportunities for your students to solve real world problems computationally. Then, it requires that they explain their solution process in in both an oral (Accountable Talk), and a written (Brief Constructed Response) format. Within these responses, the students are encouraged to use logical thinking to PROVE or JUSTIFY (Higher Level Bloom’s Taxonomy Components) their solution processes. This action enables the student to think about the steps they took get to the answer-a process that has been proven to enhance student retention of pertinent skills in mathematics.
Lastly, the students are required to complete a Student Self-Assessment. This part of the unit is also crucial to student interpretation and retention of the solution process because it requires them to think about their form of thinking and be accountable to what is involved in effectively solving a word problem.
