Description

This is a worksheet to be used with my music video "Rules That Matter" on YouTube from my channel "MrSteffesSongs" (link on the bottom of the worksheet). Answer key is included.

In the first section, students write the correct order based on the phrase "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" as heard in the song. Then students write the correct and incorrect way to evaluate 2 + 4 x 3. Finally, there are 15 problems that can be done as practice problems or as examples that are based on 6th grade Common Core Standards. Students can complete the first section (from watching the video) as homework or together as a class if the video is shown in class. In order for students to be successful, they will need to be able to subtract negative numbers and evaluate numbers to the second and third powers.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.
Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V = s³ and A = 6 s² to find the volume and surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2.
