What educators are saying

My students loved using this resource to help them with understanding the concepts of BEDMAS and made it a competition to figure out who committed the crime.
We use mini math mysteries to start our day, and to spiral skills throughout the year. They are always a hit!

Description

This Order of Operations Mini Math Mystery activities and worksheets are perfect to help your class with operations and algebraic thinking. Specifically useful for students beginning to learn PEMDAS or BEDMAS. These mysteries include parenthesis, multiplication, division, addition, and Subtraction (NO exponents, so great for beginners).

Mini Math Mysteries are engaging math activities that are designed to be done in one class period. There are 5x Math Mysteries in this pack. At the top of each page is a story to set the scene of the mystery, students then answer 16 questions to narrow down the suspects and options until they have solved these daily math questions.

This resource contains

5 x Color order of operations math mysteries

5 x Black and White versions of the same mysteries

5 x Answer pages (Marking Key)

1 x Teacher instruction page for a print and go activity

These math mysteries are designed for third, fourth, and fifth grade students. Could also be used with struggling sixth-grade students that need a little extra work and reinforcement in algebra (or advanced, gifted and talented second grade). I also leave some of the mysteries for my sub-teacher.

Math Mysteries are an independent escape room (or crack the code) type of activity where instead of using locks, students identify suspects with puzzles and word problems. This mystery is perfect all year round and is a low prep no-fuss activity.

Enjoy these order of operation activities (some call it pedmas and bodmas) and please remember to follow me by clicking the following link to easily find my latest resources and receive discounts.

Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation “add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2” as 2 × (8 + 7). Recognize that 3 × (18932 + 921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921, without having to calculate the indicated sum or product.
