Description

Motivate your students to practice writing numerical expressions with these order of operations task cards. These Writing Numerical Expressions 'Clip and Flip' Task Cards make translating words into numerical expressions fun for even the most reluctant learners. This numerical expressions activity is perfect for math centers, early finishers, small group work, intervention, and more!

These order of operations task cards are self-checking! First, students read the expression in words and clip the matching numerical expression with a clothespin or paperclip. Then, students flip over the card to see if they clipped the correct answer.

This activity was designed to support the 5th grade math standard:

Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them.

Included with these Writing Numerical Expressions 'Clip and Flip' Cards:

  • Instructions for single-player and multi-player use
  • 32 'Clip and Flip' cards

Note: Students only translate words into expressions for this activity. They are not required to solve the expressions. As an extension, teachers could require students to solve the expressions using the order of operations.

Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation “add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2” as 2 × (8 + 7). Recognize that 3 × (18932 + 921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921, without having to calculate the indicated sum or product.
