Description

PEMDAS is a common acronym for the order of operations. This packet shows a slight modification.

Multiplication and division are actually done from left to right. Addition and subtraction is also done from left to right. To show this, Multiplication and Division are written on the same line with an arrow from left to right. Addition and Subtraction are written on the same line from left to right.

This packet contains a foldable with directions, posters, and worksheets with answer keys.

5 Emoji Challenges in Black and White and Color
You can give out the black and white Emoji Challenges as worksheets or you can display the color version by printing a poster or using an interactive white board. Emoji Challenges have students use Order of Operations PEMDAS to solve for variables. Rather than use letters as variables, the variables are emojis. The only number given is the answer to the problems.

**Update 6/19/14**
This was one of my first products. I wanted to thank my first customers by adding more worksheets. The original had three worksheets. There are now 6. One can be used as a pretest / post test. I’ve put the worksheets in the order I would introduce PEMDAS for ease. Each worksheet has an answer key.

**Revised 7/21/15**
I updated the look of the product.

**Revised 1/2/17**
Emoji Challenges were added. There are 5 black and white and 5 color.

This packet is designed to introduce the concept of Order of Operations. Common Core 5.OA.1, 6.EE.A.1, 6.EE.A.2c, 6.EE.A.3

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.
Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.
Write, read, and evaluate expressions in which letters stand for numbers.
Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V = s³ and A = 6 s² to find the volume and surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2.
Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3 (2 + 𝘹) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3𝘹; apply the distributive property to the expression 24𝘹 + 18𝘺 to produce the equivalent expression 6 (4𝘹 + 3𝘺); apply properties of operations to 𝘺 + 𝘺 + 𝘺 to produce the equivalent expression 3𝘺.
