Description

Use this order of operations doodle math wheel to introduce or review the order of operations.

  • Students take notes, use color to help with memory, and complete practice problems found around the wheel.
  • Students can keep this order of operations graphic organizer in their notebooks as a resource/study tool.

The sections of the wheel include the steps of the order of operations:

1) Parentheses (or Grouping Symbols)

2) Exponents

4) Add and subtract

This order of operations resource includes:

  • Student math wheels
    • Two versions included (slightly different) – one that uses Parentheses as the first step and one that uses Grouping Symbols
  • Teacher key/wheel with completed notes and examples
  • Colored sample of wheel
  • A PowerPoint file that has a blank wheel with background, so you can add text to make your own math wheels, if you’d like (for classroom use only - not commercial use).

Features of this easy-to-use resource:

  • Notes sections and examples (notes are just suggestions, and you can alter them or use other examples that better fit your instruction if you’d like)
    • There is an example to work through, following the steps. The expression is written in the first section, and the work for that step is completed in that section. Students will need to write
  • Guided practice or individual practice: 6 expressions in the pattern around the circle for order of operations practice
  • Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows

Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Include expressions that arise from formulas used in real-world problems. Perform arithmetic operations, including those involving whole-number exponents, in the conventional order when there are no parentheses to specify a particular order (Order of Operations). For example, use the formulas V = s³ and A = 6 s² to find the volume and surface area of a cube with sides of length s = 1/2.
