Orange Shirt Day, Art Activity on Truth and Reconciliation | Indigenous Peoples
- PDF
What educators are saying
Description
This Truth and Reconciliation activity (about the residential schools and Canada's Indigenous People) parallels perfectly with Orange Shirt Day. Begin by completing activities on empathy and the familiarness of blankets. Then ease into discussing the Witness Blanket through texts, comprehension and cloze activities. The experience culminates with creating a bulletin board about the Witness Blanket (a collaborative art activity) that results in a thought-provoking display.
Your students will enjoy creating this poster as the collaborative effort unfolds.
Creating the art piece is very easy to do. Each student is given one page/piece of a large mosaic collaboration poster to colour. Once all sheets are coloured and cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large multi-coloured mosaic/poster/mural that says, "The Witness Blanket".
