Opinion Writing, Persuasive Writing, and Argumentative Writing Resources

Information about opinion writing, persuasive writing, and argumentative writing is presented on 8.5" x 11" posters that show a) the features of each type of writing, b) key words and phrases used in each type of writing, and c) signal words used in each type of writing, in lists that are differentiated for writing proficiency. A pre-writing graphic organizer and an example of the graphic organizer that is filled in, which students can use as a model, are also included in this resource.

Explanations, models and graphic organizers that explain the difference between opinion, persuasive, and argumentative writing and help your students learn how to write each type of writing are included in this resource.

There is 1 poster that explains what opinion writing is, 1 poster that explains what persuasive writing is, and 1 poster that explains what argumentative writing is. Lists of signal words students can use at the beginning, middle, and end of their writing are provided. A model of this type of writing is included along with a graphic organizer students can use for their own writing.

There are 3 different lists of signal words commonly used in opinion, persuasive, and argumentative writing for beginning/novice, intermediate, and advanced writers:

* Younger students and ELLs at a lower proficiency level will find the first list most helpful.

* Intermediate proficiency level ELLs and older students who are not especially strong writers will probably find the second list most useful.

* ELLs at an advanced proficiency level and native English-speaking students who are strong writers will benefit from the third list of signal words.

How to identify which list is for which level is explained in the Notes to the Teacher section.

All the posters and graphic organizers are available in color and black-and-white. You can display the color versions on an interactive whiteboard when presenting this material to your class or use it in a literacy center. You can photocopy and distribute the black-and-white versions to students, who can keep them in their writing journals and use them as references in school or at home.

Text is written in language that English Language Learners at an intermediate proficiency level and up and native English speakers will understand. A list of the ELA Common Core Writing standards that this resource helps address is also provided.
