Description
In this 25 page resource, students grades 6-8, are asked to plan a special meal for their entire family.
The meal must be healthy (not chips and chocolate) and include items from all 4 food groups. Students must not go over a budget of $50.00.
Students use sale flyers to help plan their meal, and calculate the cost of their meal items. Students can cut pictures from the flyers, draw their items or simply list their menu items in writing.
Students make calculations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of decimals. They must also create a problem of their own.
The project is 6 pages long. The first page describes to the students what they'll be doing and the remaining pages are where students will complete their work, calculations and answer questions.
I've included:
-A regular version of the project
-An adapted version of the project- less text and more prompts
-A suggested method of assessment for the project
-The definitions and estimation strategies that students will need to know to complete the project
-A poster to use as a reminder of the 2 main estimation strategies in the project
-A one-pager describing how to figure out serving sizes of weighed food items (meat/veggies/fruit etc.)
-4 student samples of the menu planning sheet to serve as visual examples of expectations
Students have told me that they really enjoy this project because it is "like real life" in their words. Students practice basic computation skills and see the practicality of these skills in the real world. It also gives them an appreciation for the currently high costs of food. It could also be bridged with a Social Studies unit on poverty.
You can modify this assignment for students that really struggle, by allowing the use of a calculator to assist them with the calculations.
This project is hands-on, visual and engaging for students.
