What educators are saying

Great activities to engage students. Tasks were practical getting students to practice appropriate skills they need to know when identifying syllables. This was a great help in the pullouts.
My students enjoyed these activities. I enjoyed not having to create everything. Used in small groups

    Description

This BUNDLE of Open and Closed Syllable Practice for Two-Syllable Words AND Open and Closed Irregular Syllables has over 12 different activities and games to use during small group reading. All the games and activities focus on students reading and breaking apart words into syllables.

    Regular Syllable Patterns include:

This unit focuses on syllabic patterns for VCCV, VCV, VCCCV. Included are some consonant digraphs and blends, as well as some VCE patterns in one of the syllables. There are no vowel teams / vowel digraphs or irregular syllables in these activities. I have included -er, but it is the only r-controlled vowel.

    Irregular Syllable Patterns include:

This unit focuses on syllabic patterns for -le, -ture, -ly, -sion, -tion, -al, -ous, -able, -ible,

-tive, -ful, -ance, and -ence. Most of the words are two-syllable words, however, as the irregular syllable has gotten more complicated, students will practice three and four syllable words.

    Resources and activities include:

    • Anchor Charts

    • Syllable Cards and Word Cards

    • Sorts

    • Read Words by Syllables

    • Fluency Strips

    • Break Apart into Syllables

    • Puzzles

    • Cut & Paste

    • Roll & Spin

    • Match Missing Syllable

    • Flip Books (great for Interactive Notebooks!)

    • Board Games

    • Coloring Sheets

    • Answer Keys

This unit is perfect for students who know how to read two-syllable words, but struggle with irregular endings.

See the preview for a word list and description of all the included activities. Each activity approaches syllabication and decoding slightly differently, but it all focus on reading words by syllables.
