Ontario Grade 5 and 6 Social Studies | Strand A Heritage and Identity Unit

Ontario Grade 5/6 teachers, it IS possible to teach social studies in your split-grade class without losing your mind! This Strand A Heritage and Identity resource is a blended unit, meaning that it has been carefully created to blend the key expectations of the 2023 Ontario Social Studies Curriculum so that teachers are able to teach one lesson to both grades. Full of engaging activities and complete lesson plans, this unit will have your students will enjoying learning about different types of Canadian communities from early Indigenous Peoples and European settlers and modern-day towns and cities.

Ontario Grade 5/6 Strand A Social Studies for Use with Google Slides/Classroom

The two topics covered are:

►Grade 5: Interactions of Indigenous Peoples and Europeans Prior to 1713

►Grade 6: Communities in Canada, Past and Present

Fourteen detailed 3-part lessons are included in this resource, with each lesson taking either 1 or 2 class periods to complete. Particular attention has been paid to Canada's First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities, to reflect the recommendations in the 2015 Truth & Reconciliation Report. In addition, the culminating event for the unit is a series of debates, and a full implementation plan has been provided for this event.

Altogether, this resource provides up to 22 days of lessons, depending on how you decide to implement the unit.
