What educators are saying
Description
The Grade 3 Ontario Diagnostic Math Strand Mats are a series of one- or two-paged assessments that are designed to assess student understanding of the various strands included in the Mathematics curriculum based on the Grade 3 Ontario expectations. The questions are based off of the 2020 Ontario Mathematics curriculum expectations.
What Strand Mats are Included?
There are nine math strand mats that are based off of the 2020 Ontario Mathematics curriculum documents for the Grade 3 expectations. The strand mats included are:
- Number Sense (14 questions)
- Operations (9 questions)
- Patterns and Relationships (8 questions)
- Equations and Inequalities (9 questions)
- Data Literacy (4 questions)
- Probability (5 questions)
- Geometric and Spatial Reasoning (4 questions)
- Measurement (7 questions)
- Money and Finances (6 questions)
Each strand mat includes between 4 - 16 questions. Please see above for the breakdown of questions per strand. There are a total of 66 questions included in this assessment. Each strand has its own sheet in order to make administering the assessments easier.
In addition to the printable strand mats, there is also a series of 8 possible hands-on learning experiences for students to complete to show an understanding of the expectations that cannot be measured using paper and pencil questions. These experiences include measuring mass and capacity, estimating the objects in a set, and sorting objects based on one attribute.
Use of Resource
Please note that the Ontario Diagnostic Math Strand Mats are based on the 2020 Ontario Mathematics curriculum expectations. This resource was based on the Grade 3 set of expectations and can be used as an end of the year assessment for Grade 3 or a beginning of the year assessment for Grade 4. It can also be used in Grade 3 to identify the knowledge students already have about specific math concepts and skills.
Grading the Math Strand Mats
Please note that there is no rubric or checklist included for this resource. Rather, this resource is meant to only provide the assessments that you can use to assess student understanding. When checking over these math strand mats, I use a series of look-fors, such as:
- The student has tried to solve the problem or answer the question
- The student demonstrates (level) knowledge of the math skill (e.g., the student demonstrates thorough knowledge of how to add whole numbers with sums within 20 using mental math strategies)
The degree of student understanding moves beyond whether they have written the correct response, but also includes the degree to which students have provided an incorrect response and our ability to decode where they obtained their response from (i.e., the specific error that has been made).
