Phonological/Phonemic Awareness provides a strong foundation for early reading success. As students become more proficient in hearing, identifying and manipulating sounds (phonemes), they can move onto segmenting and blending words. A systematic and cohesive approach to teaching phonological awareness can build confident readers who are less likely to struggle with decoding and spelling skills. Students with a strong phonemic awareness are much more likely to be successful readers.

Onset and Rimes are a great way for students to hear and recognize common chunks within words. There are 25 sets of word families (100 words) for students to work on.

*Option #1: Work in Sets: There are 25 sets. Each set contains a separate word family. Students who are working on hearing chunks can work with one word family at a time.

Option #2: Students who know their letters and letter sounds can mix and match word families for more of a challenge.
