Description

Teaching writing to 90 5th graders, my teaching cohorts and I were desperate for a more equitable and faster way to assess student writing. Students wrote at least one On-Demand piece a week and the grading was killing us. These rubrics were developed to facilitate the feedback process, as well as allow students to see exactly where their piece needed tweaking and where their writing was spot-on.

Included in this resource…

*3 rubrics - inform/explain, opinion, narrative

*2 variations of each rubric – one includes grading scale, the second is more general

*3 samples of completed rubrics

Each rubric is standards-based and Common Core aligned for 5th grade.

Before students are assessed using these rubrics, please make sure to review them and pre-teach all of the components. Additionally, my students loved having a copy of the rubric while writing. When they finished writing, it was a great tool for self-assessment.

These rubrics are not editable. If you have questions or request, please email me at brownbagteacher@gmail.com and I’d be happy to speak with you!

Happy Grading!
