Ofrendas por una causa Two-Week Day of the Dead Unit Advanced Spanish

Ofrendas por una causa is a two-week Day of the Dead social justice unit for advanced Spanish class or heritage Spanish class. Students work in groups to build an altar and create a slideshow presentation to honor Latino lives lost due to social justice issues.

Students will take notes, research, collaborate with their peers, create a slideshow presentation, build an altar in the classroom and take an assessment.

I have included suggested topics of research but you can adapt it to your classroom needs as I made the instruction sheet editable.

These are the suggested research topics:
● Mujeres: femicidios y violencia doméstica

● Muertes de personas LGBTQ+ por discriminación

● Muertes debido a discriminación racial

● Personas que han muerto mientras migran

● Personas que han muerto en instalaciones de ICE

● Agricultores: muertes debido a peligros químicos o calor extremo

● COVID-19: mayor tasa de muertes en personas latinas por ser trabajadores de primera línea

Note:
This unit includes some topics that could be sensitive for some. You may

wish to send home the parent letter included in this unit to ensure that parents are okay with students learning about Day of the Dead and also the social justice issues that could be triggering. I have also included an alternate

assignment you can use for students who opt-out of this unit.

Additional materials: This unit will require some physical materials to decorate altars with. You will need to source some items or ask students to bring them in.
