Description

This lesson covers the three main types of irony to students after having read the entirety of Oedipus Rex. What's included in this lesson?

  • Prezi Presentation link with Guided notes for students - Students will start with taking brief notes on irony followed by examples. The guided notes with the link to the Prezi presentation are included in this Google Drive file.
  • Irony in Oedipus work packet - The 7-page packet with instructions for students is included in this Google Drive file. Students will complete the packets where they identify dramatic and situational irony examples from the text, as well as explain key points and author's purpose in doing so.
  • Oedipus Rex the Abridged Text - This resource is free on my store page but I also included it in my google drive file. The abridged text is also included in this file. This is the one I used for teaching Oedipus Rex and easy for identifying page and line number.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will be able to define the three different types of irony.
  • Students will be able to identify examples of each type of irony in a work of fiction.
  • Students will be able to explain how a specific type of irony is demonstrated in a work of fiction.
  • Students will be able to analyze how irony is used to enhance or further the plot of a text.
  • Students will be able to explain how an author creates humor or suspense using irony.
  • Students will be able to explain how specific events in a text work to enhance the theme or message.
