What educators are saying

I use labeling activities often with my multilingual newcomers. My students love directed drawings, so this was a great way to incorporate both activities.

Description

Teaching about ocean animals? I love to end the year with some fun writing, especially within the genres we’ve covered throughout the school year. Ocean animals are a great topic for informational writing because most kids love them, there are so many subtopics to write about, and you can cover many science standards during your informational writing unit!

Although this isn’t a comprehensive informational writing unit, it can be used as an informational writing mini-unit or review, perfect if you're teaching about ocean animals!

Diagrams are such a common text feature, it’s important that kids get a lot of practice reading and producing them. Often, students are hesitant to draw animals because they can be difficult. So directed drawings are a great way to practice making diagrams while increasing drawing confidence.

In this pack, you'll find student pages to draw, label, and write about 8 ocean animals, plus tips for using them in a mini writing unit.

  • Version 1- Draw and Label, using the picture word bank
  • Version 2- Draw, label, and write on the same page
  • You can also mix them: use the drawing page and a separate page for writing. This leaves more room for both the diagram and writing.

Two writing pages included:

  • Blank lined
  • Sentence prompts for each animal

Use the enclosed Ocean Animal cover to make into a book after learning about a few!

9 Animals Included:

  • whale
  • shark
  • jellyfish
  • octopus
  • crab
  • turtle
  • seahorse
  • stingray
  • fish
